Language Arts is a subject that I think I will always hate but Mrs. Reid made it fun and easy. The reason why I hate English is because my first language is Spanish. I had a tough time with the ol’ famous spelling tests. But Mrs. Reid helped me. Let me explain so you can see she is very nice.
The spelling tests were difficult for me because I had no one to help me practice pronouncing the words, provide examples, or define them in a simple way in which a six year old could understand. My parents could not help me because they did not know the words themselves. My mom would try to help me, but it was useless. When I learned a new word, it was like my mother and I were learning together. My spelling words were aiding her to expand her vocabulary she had, which was limited. My father spoke better English than my mother. The reason why he could not help me was because he could not read or write. I needed to ask Mrs. Reid for extra help because I had no support at home. I never asked her because I was shy and embarrassed to ask for help. I would get C’s on my test and get upset because I wanted to be better. Eventually Mrs. Reid noticed I was performing poorly on my test and she helped me by coming up with more strategies to better prepare myself. She would sit down with me and help my define and fully comprehend what they words meant. She would tell me to read more books so I could be more exposed to different and bigger words. Also, she told me to encourage my parents to learn English by showing them my words that I was assigned that week. She said this was good because it was not to only benefit me, but to help my parents also because they needed to learn how to speak the language fluently. By the end of kindergarten, I was acing my test.
This challenge has really shaped the person I am today. Today, when I hear or learn a new vocabulary word, I have an instinct to look up the definition and try to use the word in my conversations. This experience forced to me exceed my expectations in my writing because even though my vocabulary that expanded profoundly, I still find it difficult to write because of my grammatical errors. This also caused me to develop a passion to tutor kids that had the same problems as me. I understand the frustration of the parents because they do not have the ability to help their kids with their education. I understand how hard it is for the kids to have a stranger help them instead of their parents. I am more than happy to help people that are going through this experience. You have to be the person you wish you had when you were little. I would of wish I that my parents or family with my homework and study my vocabulary words. I appreciate my struggle because I am no longer struggling with reading and spelling. This is why you HAVE TO pick Mrs. Reid. She is awesome
