When I was younger I hated writing while I was in school however I loved the idea of being read to. Being read to gave me a lot of excitement. In the 2nd and 3rd grade the teachers made the subject of writing sound so much more complicated to me than it really was. I didn't understand when they kept explaining to me how I should structure my work to keep it organized and flow properly. They told me to make a plan before I started writing to help figure out where I was going. We always had a writing prompt to help guide us in the right direction for something to write. I didn't like the idea of writing on that prompt most of the time because often it seemed that I couldn’t relate to the prompt very well. I also wanted to dive right into the paper that I was writing if I did actually have an idea to write about. It wasn't until the fourth grade that I had a teacher explain writing to me in a better way. Mrs. Agusph was just the teacher that I needed. She introduced me to what she called "writers workshop". She explained to me that writing had no definitive correct answer. She started by asking me to just write a par about a simple event that had happened in my life, so I did. I wrote about being thrown off of my horse and having to climb back in the saddle and ride home. I showed her the paper and she said that it was great but I should elaborate upon that idea. Confused, I asked her what she meant and she explained it to in terms of airplanes and helicopters. She said that what I had wrote was a "airplane story" like an airplane had flown over and seen the event for a brief moment. She said that she wanted a helicopter story that was like a helicopter was hovering over the event recording what was happening. I understood immediately how to write my paper from that moment. I did so and she told me that it was great and that I should be proud to have written a good story like I had done. I would definitely recommend this teacher to anyone in need of writing help.
